Convicted Murderer Dirk Gonzalez Sentenced to 111 Years

By Rebecca Palsha

Channel 2 News

11:03 a.m. AKDT, September 23, 2011
ANCHORAGE, Alaska —
Dirkston “Dirk” Gonzales sat quietly in a yellow prison jumpsuit, blinking his eyes often, as Superior Court Judge Eric Aarseth handed down his sentence of 161 years with 50 suspended in an Anchorage courtroom Friday.

A jury convicted the 21-year-old man of murder, attempted murder and burglary in 2009.

He’ll serve 111 years, which makes him eligible for parole in 37 years. By then, Gonzales will then be 54.

Gonzales shot and killed David “DJ” Irwin in 2007 after he was kicked out of a party. He then stepped over Irwin’s body and shot 15-year-old Stephanie Nilsson. The pair had been hiding in a bathroom.

Aarseth told Gonzales that his previous actions, in and out of jail, show he often acted like, “a bully,” and that if he was let out now Gonzales would likely committee another violent felony.

“The danger you pose to society right now, this is the appropriate sentence,” Aarseth said.

Gonzales told his victims and their families he was sorry.

“I didn’t think, or plan, that after one night at a party I would wake up in a nightmare that was my own fault,” Gonzales said. “I’m asking for a chance to be forgiven by those affected from this tragedy. From them, I say to you, I am truly sorry for what I did.”

Gonzales had turned 17 a few weeks before the shooting.

He was charged as an adult and has been in solitary confinement for most of his incarceration.
