ANCHORAGE, Alaska—
Anchorage police arrested a 34-year-old local man Tuesday accused of sexually abusing a young girl for several years, periodically beating her and threatening to kill members of her family if she ever told others.

According to APD spokesperson Lt. Dave Parker, Terry Sievers was taken into custody by detectives with the department’s Crimes Against Children Unit. He has been charged with first-degree and second-degree sexual abuse of a minor.

Court documents say the victim, who is now 15, told the unit’s Detective Len Torres in October that the abuse began when she was 4 or 5 years old, when Sievers — a friend of the family — allegedly walked into her bedroom and beat her before performing and demanding oral sex.

The fight over an Anchorage law banning people from sitting or lying on downtown sidewalks continued Thursday in front of City Hall as protesters gathered to defy the new rules, which went into effect at 6 a.m.

At noon, a group of about 20 men and women lingered along Sixth Avenue, some holding signs, while two security guards and a police officer looked on. The protesters included Lisa Maxon, lying flat on her back on the sidewalk, and Bryant DeHusson, sitting in a chair holding a placard that read, “This is illegal.”

ANCHORAGE, Alaska—
Anchorage Police say hardened snow banks on the side of the road proved unforgiving late Thursday night, and may have contributed to the death of a passenger riding in an SUV.

It was around 11:30 p.m. The snow had just begun to fall, as the driver headed south on Gambell Street and crossed 15th Avenue.

“Whatever the speed was, it was too fast for conditions,” said Sgt.Glen Daily. “The road goes downhill and curves. If you’re carrying too much speed, then the tires don’t grip as they should, and as you’re trying to go down the curve, the car just slides. It turns into a sled.”
