Senior Airman Clinton Reeves, 22, disappeared more than a week ago, military officials say. The “unusual circumstances” surrounding his unexplained absence prompted police to consider the search a possible criminal matter, said Lt. David Parker, a police spokesman.

Another disturbing claim to fame for Alaska puts the state’s two largest cities No. 2 and No. 3 on a Forbes list of the nation’s most dangerous cities for women.

While Anchorage and Fairbanks trailed Saginaw, Mich., for the overall lead, the two Alaska cities had the highest rape rates for cities on the list.

Fairbanks finished third overall, but the Golden Heart City has a monstrous lead in per-capita rapes, with more than double the rape rate of the other nine cities. Forbes reports the equivalent of 191 rapes per 100,000 residents in what it termed a “hotbed for sexual violence.”

Anchorage finished second overall and second in rapes, with 86 per 100,000 residents.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska—
The Anchorage Police Department says nobody has died in Anchorage this year in drunk-driving crashes. APD says the number of fatalities from operating under the influence, or OUI, is decreasing, and its “0 for 12″ campaign is aiming for zero local deaths in OUI-related crashes in 2012.

APD reports that in 2007 there were 1,964 arrests for OUI and 11 deaths in OUI-related crashes. In 2011 there were 2,079 arrests with three deaths.

Anchorage police have confirmed that the body recovered from Matanuska Lake Monday is that of missing 18-year-old barista Samantha Koenig.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska—

Anchorage police announced Monday evening that a body believed to be that of missing barista Samantha Koenig was found during a crime-scene investigation in Matanuska Lake, apparently ending a months-long mystery that has gripped the city and attracted national coverage.

In a joint appearance with FBI officials at APD headquarters, APD Chief Mark Mew said divers discovered the body Monday morning during an investigation at the lake. The search drew numerous members of APD, the Alaska State Troopers and FBI to the scene, which lies off the Glenn Highway near the Palmer-Wasilla Highway interchange and the Matanuska-Susitna Regional Hospital. State medical examiners will verify identity of the body.

James Fayette, an assistant district attorney, took a day off work to fly to Juneau on his own dime to speak out against HB80 during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Mark Neuman, R-Big Lake, would allow Alaskans to use lethal force in self-defense anywhere they are legally allowed. Current law explicitly affords that right only when someone is at home or work.

A newly-released court document sheds some light on charges against Israel Keyes — the man who Anchorage police believe may have ties to the Feb. 1 abduction of 18-year-old barista Samantha Koenig — and alleges that he may have withdrawn thousands of dollars from a bank account that wasn’t his. Keyes was arrested last week in Lufkin, Tex., and police say a stolen debit card found in Keyes’s possession was used to make withdrawals in Alaska, Arizona and New Mexico before the arrest.

Koenig’s abduction has been subject of much speculation in Alaska and beyond. Her whereabouts or condition remain unknown, and police have offered few details about their investigation or Keyes.

Anchorage police say a young man and his juvenile accomplice are charged with stealing a pickup, its attached trailer and items from other vehicles near Arctic Boulevard and Raspberry Road early Friday.

Devontay Gordon, 19, and a 17-year-old male face charges of vehicle theft and criminal mischief, said police, who are now looking for anyone else whose belongings may have been pilfered.

A Halliburton Energy Services employee started a pickup just before 4 a.m. in the 6900 block of Arctic Boulevard to let it warm up, then called 911 when he saw the truck and attached 24-foot trailer being driven away, police said. He jumped in another vehicle to follow the pickup, lost track of it, then found it abandoned about a mile away, police said.

An Anchorage man suspected of sexually abusing a child died after shooting himself Thursday just before detectives could arrest him, a police spokeswoman said.

The police had warrants Thursday to arrest John Fields, 44, and search his home in the 700 block of North Pine Street. The detectives knocked on Fields’ door about 9 a.m. but nobody answered.

“They forced entry into the home, because they had a search warrant,” police spokeswoman Anita Shell said. “(They) did not know he was there, because he didn’t come to the door.”
