Hat that saved officer’s life now on display
Deputy Police Chief Ross Plummer was shot in the hat 30 years ago.

A heroic hat is now on display at the Anchorage Police Department. Deputy Police Chief Ross Plummer says it saved his life 30 years ago this week. Plummer was in the middle of a struggle with Michael Stith when Stith pulled out a gun and shot him once in the shoulder and once in the arm. According to Plummer, Stith put the gun up to Plummer’s head and shot. But the bullet only grazed the back of his head because he says his police cap protected him and gave Stith a false impression of where his head was.
